Wet snow weighs 20+ pounds per cubic foot and Park City's season opens in October. The hazard sweep, the deep watering window, the species most likely to split — and the one piece of fall tree advice almost everyone gets wrong.
Dry powder — the stuff Park City sells to the world — weighs somewhere between one and five pounds per cubic foot. That is not what breaks trees.
What breaks trees is the other kind: the heavy, wet, spring-loaded snow that arrives in late October, in November, and again in March, when temperatures hover near freezing and the snow comes down with real water content in it. Wet snow can weigh twenty pounds per cubic foot or more. Multiply that across the surface area of a mature conifer canopy and you are talking about hundreds to thousands of pounds of load applied to wood that was not designed for it. A single 60-foot spruce has been measured carrying more than 7,000 pounds of snow.
Park City averages well north of 200 inches of snow a year, and the season reliably opens in October. That first heavy wet storm — often arriving while deciduous trees still hold leaves, which multiplies the catchment area — is the single most destructive event of the year for Wasatch Back trees.
The good news: almost every snow-load failure is predictable weeks or months in advance, and the work that prevents it is cheap compared to the work that follows it. This is the fall checklist.
Understanding the failure modes tells you what to look for on a walkthrough. Snow and ice loading produces a specific family of damage:
Ice makes all of this worse through a second mechanism. It adds weight and stiffens the wood. Frozen limbs cannot flex the way they do in summer, so instead of bending under load and shedding it, they snap. A tree that would shrug off eight inches of powder can lose major structure to two inches of freezing rain.
Risk is not evenly distributed. The profile of a high-risk tree is consistent:
Junipers, arborvitae, and yews are the classic snow-load failures in Utah landscapes. Multiple upright stems arising from near ground level create a structure that catches snow in the middle and then splays apart under it. Once a multi-stem evergreen splits at the base, it does not recover its form.
These are also frequently planted right against the house, which means a failure lands on the structure — and, for junipers specifically, they are a defensible-space problem in the same spot for entirely separate reasons.
Trees with long, flat, horizontally-extended branches collect snow far more efficiently than narrow, upright, or steeply-angled growth. A narrow conifer with a strong central leader sheds load down and off. A wide-spreading canopy holds it.
Included bark at a branch union, an old storm wound, a cavity, a previous partial failure, visible decay, or beetle-killed wood all reduce load capacity dramatically. Dead trees are the obvious case — beetle-killed conifers lose structural integrity year over year, and a standing dead lodgepole that survived last winter is a meaningfully worse bet this winter. Aspen and other deciduous trees that have not fully dropped when the first wet storm hits present enormously more surface area than they will two weeks later. Utah State University Extension groups winter tree injury into several distinct categories, and the non-obvious ones cause damage that shows up months later, in spring, when nobody connects it back to winter.
Evergreens respire all winter. They continue losing moisture through their needles on cold, dry, windy days — which describes a lot of Wasatch winter days. When the ground is frozen solid, the roots cannot draw up water to replace what is lost. The result is winter burn: browning needles or scorched evergreen foliage, characteristically worst on the southwest side of the plant, where sun and wind exposure combine.

On thin-barked trees, winter sun warms the bark on the south and west sides during the day; it then refreezes hard at night. That cycle kills cambium and produces sunken dead patches, which subsequently become entry points for Cytospora canker.
Most vulnerable: maple, ash, crabapple, mountain ash, and fruit trees — particularly young, recently-transplanted specimens with smooth bark and no canopy shading their own trunk.
When winter temperatures drop well below normal, or fluctuate sharply during dormancy, vascular tissue can cavitate. Marginally hardy species planted at the edge of their range — which describes a lot of ornamental plantings at Park City elevations — are the usual casualties.
Do this before the first storm, not after. You are looking for anything positioned to fail onto something that matters — the house, the driveway, the power drop, the parking pad, the neighbor’s roof:
Photograph what you find, with dates. That record has value for both insurance and for tracking change year over year.
Dead, diseased, and hazardous material should come out before the load arrives. This is both the cheapest tree work you will buy all year and the strongest position to be in if a claim ever follows.
It matters for coverage, too. Carriers routinely deny tree-damage claims on the grounds that the tree was a known, pre-existing hazard left standing. The most under-practiced item on this list, and the one that prevents winter burn. Target late October to early November, watching the forecast for sustained freezing temperatures and getting a thorough deep watering in within a week or two of the ground freezing solid.
Prioritize evergreens, and prioritize anything planted in the last three years. A tree that enters winter well-hydrated is substantially more resistant to desiccation and general winter stress than one that goes in dry.
A thick mulch layer over the root zone moderates soil temperature swings and slows moisture loss. Keep it pulled back from direct contact with the trunk.
One important caveat specific to this region: in the 0–5 foot zone around a structure, combustible bark mulch is exactly what defensible-space requirements are trying to eliminate. For junipers, arborvitae, and similar multi-stemmed evergreens, binding the stems together with strong rope or twine before winter prevents the splay-and-split failure. Wrap in a spiral from the bottom up, snug but not cutting in, and remove it in spring.
Newly transplanted and young thin-barked trees benefit from trunk wrap through the first few winters to prevent sunscald. Apply in late fall, and take it off in spring — wrap left on year-round traps moisture and causes its own problems.
Decide before the first storm how equipment would reach your property if a tree comes down in January. Steep, narrow, or gated mountain driveways are a real constraint on emergency response, and knowing the answer in advance shortens the response when it matters.
A great deal of seasonal content will tell you that autumn, after leaf drop, is a fine time to prune. For most trees in Utah, it is not, and USU Extension is explicit about this.
Trees are not fully dormant in fall even after the leaves have dropped. Pruning delays dormancy at every wound and invigorates the wood around each cut — which means the tissue does not acclimate properly for winter. Trees pruned in fall harden off poorly and are measurably less able to withstand cold than trees left alone. If a hard freeze arrives suddenly, that is when the damage shows up. Stone fruits like cherries and peaches are especially sensitive.
Late summer pruning has its own problem: significant dieback at the edges of pruning wounds.
The right window for most structural and maintenance pruning in Utah is late winter into early spring, while the tree is fully dormant and before buds swell— roughly February through late April in this climate. Energy reserves are high, the structure is visible without leaves, and the tree moves straight from the cut into the growing season.
The exceptions, and they matter: dead branches, diseased branches, and branches that pose a genuine safety hazard should be removed whenever they are found, including in fall. Safety overrides the seasonal calendar every time.
So the correct fall posture is: take out what is dead, diseased, or dangerous now — and put the crown thinning, the shaping, and the structural work on the calendar for late winter. Our pruning service works on exactly that schedule.

If wet snow is visibly loading branches during a storm, you can reduce the load by gently brushing or shaking it off with a broom, working upward from beneath the branchso you are lifting rather than pressing. Work from the ground. Do not climb a ladder into a loaded tree in a storm — this is a leading cause of serious homeowner injury every winter.
Ice-laden branches are brittle and will break under the impact of anything you hit them with. Let ice melt off on its own and assess afterward.
Check for hanging or partially detached limbs lodged in the canopy before walking underneath. These are the most dangerous condition on a property after a snow event, and they are easy to miss from directly below.
Young trees laid over by snow often recover their form once the load comes off. Resist the urge to stake aggressively or force them upright — give them a season before deciding they are lost.
The honest line: if the work requires leaving the ground, it is not a homeowner job. Chainsaw work overhead, tensioned limbs, anything near a structure, and anything near a power line all belong to a crew with rigging, insurance, and training. Tensioned wood under snow load is particularly unforgiving — a limb holding hundreds of pounds releases that energy the instant it is cut, and it does not always go where you expect.
