Strong Roots, Keep it Local
Kamas is the gateway to the Uintas, and the properties we work here look less like ski-town lots and more like acreage. That changes the job: fewer sectional removals over roof lines, more stand-scale thinning, more spring cleanup across open ground, and more owners who are managing a parcel rather than a yard. It also changes the economics. On a steep Park City lot you are paying for method — rigging, climbing, dismantling a tree because there is nowhere to drop it. Out here you are paying for area, and because a chipper and truck can usually get close to the material, the cost per acre is a fraction of what the same acre would cost up the canyon. The trade-off is that the problems are stand-scale rather than tree-scale, so the honest plan is usually phased over several seasons rather than finished in a week.
WUI code reported adopted under the HB 48 deadline — confirm the local boundary
Kamas has been reported among the Wasatch Back municipalities that adopted a WUI code under the state's 1 January 2026 deadline. We are being deliberately careful with that: our sourcing on Kamas specifically is secondary reporting rather than a city document we could read, and smaller jurisdictions publish less online. What is not in doubt is the state-side programme, which applies regardless of what any city adopted. Utah's HB 48 took effect 1 January 2026, bringing a statewide high-risk boundary, lot-level triage assessments, and risk-based fees that move from flat to assessment-driven in 2028. For parcels in unincorporated Summit County, the county assigns a triage classification of I, II or III based on compliance, and the state began distributing notices to owners in high-risk areas in 2026. Call the city office or the fire district for your parcel rather than trusting any map you find in a search result, including our reading of it.
Verify before you spend money: Kamas City offices, or Summit County for unincorporated parcels — 435-336-3200. Boundaries, thresholds and fees are set by the state and by individual jurisdictions, and several were actively being amended when this page was written.
At roughly 6,500 feet Kamas sits in the transition band, which means the fuel picture is mixed rather than dominated by one thing: Gambel oak, aspen and mixed conifer, with Douglas-fir favouring the north-facing slopes and the Uinta foothills pushing toward lodgepole as you climb east. Mixed stands are harder to generalise about and more worth walking, because the right management for the aspen in one draw is not the right management for the conifer on the ridge above it. The lodgepole component is the one to watch as you move east — same-age dense stands are the classic mountain pine beetle setup, and thinning is the only intervention that reliably interrupts an outbreak before it takes the stand.
Kamas properties are generally more equipment-friendly than Park City — more open ground, more room to work, and more parcels where a chipper and truck can get close to the material. That makes per-acre work meaningfully cheaper here than on a steep Park City lot. The constraint is distance rather than difficulty: these are bigger parcels, so the walk from the access point to the work is the thing that costs money, and staging material near a road or gate rather than at the far boundary makes a real difference to the bill. Spring is the other factor. Snowmelt comes off later at this elevation than down in Heber, and the ground needs to carry equipment before a land-management pass is worth starting, so the season here opens a few weeks behind the valley.
